Vampires The Gay Way

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

While Twilight was written for teens, and more precisely for teen girls to sink their good girl teeth into, the biggest following by far is fat middle aged women followed by gay men.  That isn’t to say there aren’t a lot of teenage girls screaming to see Edward on the screen do some brooding.  Personally, I think they would be better off watching Angel, his brooding is so much better.  Personally David Boreanaz is much better on Bones than he ever was on Angel or Buffy the Vampire Slayer (BTVS), but that is a totally different discussion.  This is about brooding Edward Cullen, though I think I would have rather watched a much happier Edward Scissorhands after reading seeing the reviews.

Tuesday’s With Bradley

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

What would your Tuesday with Brad be without a little perspective from Google?

As we get closer to wrapping up American Idol for the season and probably forever, William Hung has hit the Top 100 searches again. So where is William Hung? At the moment the ex-Idol hopeful is working on a Math degree and UC Northridge with hopes of becoming a math teacher.

With no big surprise mystery illnesses on House last night nothing jumps out of the Google Trends page from there. I am going through the entries never the less and find is Courtney Henggeler is currently rated in the “Volcanic” for hotness on Google. Of course after “Bog Creatures” it is surprising no one tossed this hottie in a volcano.

We all knew Roger Clemens was a rock star of baseball. (more…)

Why Do Women Like Slash

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

[ad]It may be the simple answer, but it’s true. The thought of two guys, especially two hot guys, being together is one of the biggest female sexual fantasies. It turns us on, gets us horny and you, the husband/boyfriend/significant other, are frequently the lucky recipient of that lust.

But it can go deeper than that. We, as slash writers, like to explore the relationships between the two men we slash. Why they love each other or might come to love each other. Why they might have feelings for someone of the same gender and how they came to those feelings, particularly if they’ve only ever been portrayed as straight in the show’s canon.

There really are very few homosexual (and by this I mean male/male) relationships currently (or recently) portrayed on television. Off the top of my head I can name Six Feet Under, Queer as Folk (both US and UK versions), Will and Grace (to an extent) and Torchwood. If you, the reader, can think of others, please feel free to name them in the comments. Recently, soap opera As The World Turns has developed a relationship between the characters Luke and Noah (even though they have so far only kissed). And Joss Whedon (who loving portrayed lesbian relationships in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) hinted that Angel and Spike may have had a one night stand at some point in their past.

Now, while many people relish these relationships and write them (if we follow the show), a majority of slash writers (including myself and those I know) tend to write relationships that are considered non-canonical.

Now, quite a few of these couples have so much onscreen UST (unrequited or unresolved sexual tension) and subtext that it’s hard to believe their relationship is not canon. As my friend Fia and I are fond of saying, their relationships are practically canon, or to use a phrase from Joss Whedon, the subtext is rapidly becoming text. Jack and Daniel (Stargate SG-1), John and Rodney (Stargate Atlantis), Angel and Wesley (AtS), Spike and Angel (BtVS and pre-season five AtS) and Matt and Mohinder (Heroes season two) all come to mind.

Others are more subtle with vague canon hints that there may be more than friendship or enmity between the two characters. Sometimes this takes a little more digging on the part of the writer to find the spark that is hiding. Even rarer are the relationships where the characters have hardly anything in common, have never met in canon, or even those where the characters come from two different shows.

And therein is the challenge for the writer. How to write the how and why of these two people meeting, falling in love (or lust) and having a relationship. It takes a talented writer to make of these things come together in a believable way. It is even harder to make two different shows mesh. But succeeding in doing so makes the story all that more rewarding.

Of course you’re still going to have those authors who write two guys together for no other reason than “OMG they’re hot together!!!!!!1111!!!!!111!!” That can be fun, but it’s ultimately unsatisfying (at least for me), if there is no background for the two meeting or having sex.

So women like slash for the possibilities, for the romance, for the angst. And yes, for the sex. Slash has been around for a long time (forty years, Kirk/Spock anyone?) and I don’t see it ending anytime soon.

Note From Brad: I would like to welcome Katy as our first regular guest blogger and hope she will become a regular contributor to The Other Blog.

Let’s get Inspired - American Idol

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

[ad]

Michael Johns Michael Johns performs Aerosmith’s Dream On and he is sounding great. The audience is primed and I think he has guaranteed himself another return trip for next week.
syesha Syesha sing I believe by Fantasia. Could she have picked a worse song? Last week second rate Whitney, this week second rate Fantasia
Jason is going to pull a Hawaiian version of Somewhere over the Rainbow. Like Syesha he is trying to be an imitator rather than himself. It was well done, but it is still a cover.
Kristy Lee Cook Kristy is going to pull the country music that she does so well with. I am not really familiar with the song Any Way but I love her voice and want to see Syesha go bye bye, and at this point I think it will be the in the bottom three with someone else if the voting holds true. Everyone loved it and Simon says she is starting to look like a start
David Cook David is going to do Innocent by Our Lady Peace. Every rocker needs a horrible ballad in their repetoir and this may be his. Randy thought it should have been better Maybe he should have picked a Journey song. Simon didn’t care for it, and thought it was pompous. It
Carly Smithson Carly is going to attempt Queen and the show must go on. I am worried about this performance. Not even Paula thought it was great. Simon thought it was the wrong song and angry, but liked the wardrobe.
David Archuleta What will Archuleta massacre this week? (commercial break) He is singing something called Angels. I dislike it by the title alone. he starts out lack luster.Everyone loved again. Thank god he will be a flash in the pan after this is over..
Brooke White Brooke White is going to pull Carol Kings You Got a Friend. This is a great choice for her. First Brooke gave us a song about James Taylor when she did Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain. Now she is covering a song James himself covered. She does it beautifully. The, ‘thank you’ to the audience was great. Randy wasn’t jazzed. Paula thought it was great and difinitive. Simon thought it was nice, original, no but none the less very pleasant.
