A Small Rant About Cinco de Mayo!

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Today for those who have figured it out is Cinco de Mayo, that is the fifth of May for all you gringos of varying neck colors. This is the biggest thing happening on the pop culture beat which is exactly why I am not going to talk about Mexican music, movies, food or anything else all those others are catering to.

As Americans we love to celebrate any holiday that gives us an excuse to drink and pretend we are all inclusive. This just proves we have it within us to be inclusive but usually are just too big an asshole to do it. The majority of Americans including blacks and a lot of other minorities treat Mexicans in this country as the lowliest of the low. We don’t even give them the courtesy of second class citizens, we treat them like second class people, and often times not even giving them the courtesy of treating them like people. I am ashamed of Americans and America when I see this happen. (more…)

Movie Death

Saturday, May 3rd, 2008

I am not talking about some sad flashback of a dying character, the stereotypical quick demise of the cocky black dude, or the gory death of a bubble headed scantily clad buxom blond running to or hiding in the first place some slasher is going to be. I am referring to the death of movies as we know them.

The price of going to the movies is continuing to go up. The industry is being controlled by ever fewer companies. The MPAA is nothing but a sham. (If you have not seen “This Film is Not Yet Rated” I suggested you do) The price of DVD’s is dropping. Last but not least there are loads of free content of varying quality online.

First and foremost, no I do not believe we will see then end of the movie theater, blockbuster hits, or dismal flops that not even the best spin can save. I do believe though we are moving into an era where people are going to see a lot fewer first run movies at the theater. With the cheap tickets being nine bucks or more and another nine bucks for popcorn and a drink there is no way our economy can continue to support escapist activities on this scale. (more…)
