So You Think You Can Dance Results 6-26-08

With only one hour to fit in a bunch of commercials, two promotional performances, and six solo dances the show strikes hard and fast. We have intro then commercials. The opening number was a Mia Michael’s piece with a lot of percussion. Musically it felt somewhere between We Will Rock You and the dance scene in The Matrix Reloaded. Visually it felt like it could have opened a mid eighties Tom Petty video.

Back from commercials we have Cat Deeley in a less than flattering grey dress. Without the big ruffle in the top front or if the dress were backwards or upside down, it would have been much better. Without any delay she tells Chelsea Traille and Thayne off to warm up their solos. No Surprise that the next couple is Chris and Comfort Fedoke. I called both of those.

The final couple in the bottom three was going to be a hard choice since everyone else was so good. I am not really surprised that it ended up being Kourtni Lind and Matt. Their piece was experimental and slightly weird which made it stand out, but it also made it something some people just didn’t get. It was a risk that was beautiful, but America didn’t think enough of it to put them higher. They dance for their lives.

The Solos:

  • Chelsie Traille was smooth, graceful and beautiful. She was not however very interesting.
  • Thayne did a lot of running and jumping, but not a lot of dancing.
  • Comfort Fedoke was very good at her thing.
  • Chris was more of Thayne, but rather boring.
  • Kourtni Lind was complete and beautiful with her usual high level of technical skill.
  • Matt was extraordinary.

Special Performances:

Quest which contains several DDR SYTYCD alums danced to an interesting piece of music creating something between Weird Science and They Might Be GiantsWhy Does The Sun Shine. I as rather disapointed that the only woman in the troupe was also the only one not to have her shirt fly up while spinning on their heads. It was a cool performance over all and something I would probably pay money to see.

Jordan Sparks was the second performance. As much as I liked her on American Idol and as well as she sings, she has let herself go. Being as fat as Aretha Franklin doesn’t mean you will ever sing as well as Aretha any more than being as bald as Ben franklin makes you as wise as Franklin. She sang her song well, and is incredibly talented but if she was this fat for Idol she would have been voted off rather quickly no matter how well she sang, simply because looks are everything in our visual media culture. In the end even if she had sang as well as Aretha Franklin she came off as the epidemy of something Sir Mix-A-Lot would sing about.

Judges Return:

Somewhat surprising we find the Chelsea Traille is dismissed without any playing around with people’s emotions. I am in no way surprised that Kourtni didn’t go home, she is too good both in her technical and style to be let go no matter how often she makes the bottom three. I did however think it would have been Comfort that went home, and it probably will next week. Comfort is good at what she does, but her abilities beyond that are waning.

Nigel first off apologizes for coming down so hart on Matt, and says his solo was brilliant then tells him to go sit down. This is a good thing for Kourtni if she had to partner with either of the two shorter dancers, either Thayne or Chris she would have quickly been doomed. I also like her with Matt. The tough choice was to get rid of Thayne or Chris. Neither of them are particularly unique when it comes to comparing everyone in the competition. We say goodbye to Chris which means next week that Comfort and Thayne will be paired together, putting them at the disadvantage of being new together.

Alas my secret crushes Courtney Ann Galiano, Chelsie Hightower, Katee Sheen are all through.  I shall miss my tall beauty Kourtni Lind with all my heart… :(
