Update - The deadlines have been extended by 1 month to accommodate all students who may be trying to finish up their end of year projects. The June deadlines below are now correct.
As an unpublished writer with a couple of completed novels under my belt and a lot of short stories that will never even be sent out for consideration I know how hard it is to get published and feel the pain of other aspiring writers. This is why I am proud to announce The Other Blogs first writing contest.
The Other Blog’s High School Short Fiction Contest, will take registrations until the end of May 2008 . Stories can be uploaded viewed and edited until June 7th. Reader voting and commenting will last until the 21st and winners will be officially announced by the 25th. Stories should be at least 500, but not more than 1500 words (as counted by MS Word) of original fiction. Fan Fiction is not allowed for this contest . I am planning a Short Fan Fiction contest once I can work out all the legal details.
The Categories:
- Romance/Relationships (Gay or Straight)
- Science Fiction/Technology
- Fantasy/Horror
- Gay, Lesbian, Bi, or Transgender
- General Fiction
Prizes:
- Grand Prize Winner: $25.00
- First Place Winner in each category will receive $5.00
- The first three runner ups in each category will receive a rotating banner ad for a year to their blog/website
- All contestants will receive a text link to their blog or website, and permanent inclusion on The Other Blog.
- Local Newspapers will also be notified of winners and runners up.
Rules:
- Contestants must be in High School (Grades 9-12), or between the ages of 14 and 18 at the time of entry. Winners will be verified before prizes are given.
- Contestants may only submit one story, but may submit it to two categories for consideration.
- A story may only win in one category and that category will be determined by the one with the most diggs.
- Votes will be tallied by use of Digg. One Digg is One Vote and can not be easily manipulated by either the writer(s) or site owner. If I Digg your story my vote will count just the author’s or their mothers.
- Shameless self promotion is encouraged, but any email spam leading directly back to the story or any link or other page on this domain shall disqualify the story from the contest and the author from all future contests. To report fraud send an email to abuse@theotherblog.net
Entries should be emailed to StoryContest@theotherblog.net and should include Name, Age, Grade, School with office contact number, and blog or website address if you wish it included. Home Schoolers must include a home phone number and send a copy of a valid picture ID if they win in order to claim their prize (social security numbers can be blacked out if included on the ID). A printable photos of the contestant may be included as an attachment. of the contestant The story should be spellchecked and proofed for grammar and readability before submission and may be included in the body of the story or as an attached ms word readable document. My preference is for *.rft and 14pt Dark Courier font. All stories will be read by the Brad or Katy Hart and must meet acceptable content guidelines. Stories advocating hate will be disqualified with no notice or reasons given. All entries will be formatted to fit blog standards upon inclusion in the contest, email addresses will not be reprinted.

Can I enter a fanfiction? I’m working on something with Batman…*wicked grin*
Not for this one Ryan… pass this along along so we have enough entries to get another going later this summer.
Alright…I’ll pursuse my weapons rack of tales.
I’ve talked to my friends about it, but I’m the one that’s the writer.
