Grey’s Gay Ouster Two Heroes Scribes Gone Odds and Ends

[ad]What’s Hot is back in action. Spoilers for Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty and Supernatural in today’s edition.

In an exclusive from Entertainment Weekly’s Michael Ausiello, Brooke Smith of Grey’s Anatomy reveals that she’s been let go from the show and that her storyline, in which her character has recently began to explore her sexuality, has been cut out and other homosexual storylines are being toned down. According to one Grey’s source, the suits “had issues” with both the explicit direction her character was taking and, more importantly, with the Hahn character in general. And this seems to have been an order from above (read: the network) rather than the producers. Smith is quoted as saying: “And so I was surprised and disappointed when they just suddenly told me that they couldn’t write for my character anymore.” Here is the entire response from executive producer Shonda Rhimes: “Brooke Smith was obviously not fired for playing a lesbian. Clearly it’s not an issue as we have a lesbian character on the show – Calliope Torres. Sara Ramirez is an incredible comedic and dramatic actress and we wanted to be able to play up her magic. Unfortunately, we did not find that the magic and chemistry with Brooke’s character would sustain in the long run. The impact of the Callie/Erica relationship will be felt and played out in a story for Callie. I believe it belittles the relationship to simply replace Erica with ‘another lesbian.’ If you’ll remember, Cristina mourned the loss of Burke for a full season.”

Other big news includes the firing of two top writers for NBC’s hit Heroes. Co-executive producers and writers Jesse Alexander and Jeph Loeb, who have been with the show since its 2006 inception, were fired due to creative differences according to reports. Reportedly the network is not happy with the direction the show is taking or with the $4 million per episode budget it seems to be racking up. There is no word on whether or not creator/executive producer Tim Kring will replace the two or what impact their departure might have on the show.

Finally, spoilers! On Brothers & Sisters, Kitty will be getting a baby and the baby storyline actually came about because so many of the show’s producers (a lot of them) are going through adoption experiences of their own right now. On Ugly Betty, Somebody will be making out with Jesse, and it’s not Betty! There will be more smooching behind people’s backs when Marc cheats on Cliff, which just might lead to a marriage proposal. And in Supernatural news, the show is now casting for an 18-year-old Dean. I think this has something do with why the angels are so into him.
