New Music Review - Basia Bulat and Bob Mould

[ad]Let’s start this week with the voice of Basia Bulat. She doesn’t have the traditional singer/songwriter vibe we hear from so many. Her sound is her own. The music is so unusually arranged that it gives way to an infectious desire to hear the next song. With guitar, ukulele, and autoharp backing the vocals and wide range of percussion keeping the beat Oh My Darling is a fabulous album, that I wish I would have found before before the US release to have those extra moments alone with her, before I had to share her with the rest of the country.

Our second album of the week is Bob Mould’s District Line. The former Hüsker Dü guitarist has given us another great collection of songs. From the electric guitars of Stupid Now which takes me back to my younger years listening to Hüsker Dü. The acoustic guitar work in Again and Again gives a great feel to the break up the song is about. My personal favorite off the album is Return to Dust with its electronic beginning taken over by hard guitars and steady percussion.
