Oh Dear God Why?
[ad]Okay, I understand that here are only so many stories to tell and that Hollywood is going to do whatever it can to save money on making movies so it can rake in the profits. That’s why sequels and remakes get made. But in recent years, Hollywood has started in on some movies that I grew up with and bandied about the word “remake”.
First off is “Tron”. The hallmark of early CGI work has had it’s name tossed around as remake fodder for quite a while now. It could be done given the strides that have been made in special effects circles, but then it’s taken away from what makes “Tron” a great movie. It’s the low budget effects that makes us love it so.
Not a film I grew up with, but one that is considered classic is “The Day the Earth Stood Still”. How many people have the icon image of Klatuu standing in front of his ship branded into their brains? Well this year a remake is being released featuring Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Connoly. I’m trying to reserve my judgement until I’ve seen it, but my brain automatically switches into “WHY?” gear.
Not all remakes are successful. See Gus Van Sant’s “re-imagining” of the Hitchcock classic “Psycho”. Anytime a Stephen King movie gets remade for television. “House of Wax’ (though killing off Paris Hilton may seem a plus). And now comes the news that “The Karate Kid” is getting remade, with Jaden Smith. WHY??????? Ralph Maccio (who turned 47 recently) will always and forever be my “Karate Kid”. I will always picture Pat Morita when I hear the words “Wax on, wax off”.
Hollywood, sometimes it’s best just to leave things well enough alone.
