Shaft Your Mouth

In the world of tributes this has got to be one of the strangest I have seen recently. Whether you loved Issac Hayes because of Shaft, or because he was Chef (”Hello Children!”), or you loathed him because he was the gay lover of Tom Cruise, I mean the coreligionist of Tom Cruise he was always memorable. If ukeles aren’t enough of a tribute let me have a moment to give you my favorite Issac Hayes song from South Park, Chocolate Salty Balls.
Paula Abdul Scared of Kara DioGuardi

Everyone from Fox News to The Other Blog to Your Mom is talking about Kara DioGuardi as the latest edition to American Idol.
Paula Abdul is excited but “concerned” about new “American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi, she told Phoenix’s 104.7 KISS FM Johnjay & Rich radio show on Monday.
“I am concerned about the audience and acceptance. Time will tell. We’ll see,” she said.
She also said producers hired the Grammy-nominated songwriter because they “wanted to try a change.
If anyone should be concerned by this move it is Randy Jackson. Simply put Kara is no where flaky enough to replace Paula. It is possible that Paula Abdul is concerned that Kara will be just as mean to her as Simon, but I kind of doubt it. Kara just doesn’t seem to be the type who would go in for the sarcasm, she seems like the type that would instantly go to hair pulling, eyes scratching and biting.
I simply can’t wait to see how this potential disaster works out. I am finally looking forward to the cold of January.

According to reports from TV Guide, Simon Cowell is promising big changes on Idol this year. With auditions and the tour underway we can only guess what is going though his head.
Chief among Cowell’s complaints was what he called the overwhelming media-savviness of this season’s contestants. “I’m not sure that they ever showed their real personalities,” he said. “They were like robots.” (Nevertheless, he praised last season’s runner-up, David Archuleta, on his recent success, calling him “the perfect pop star.”)
Of course the way I read pop star it was said with the enthusiasm and happiness that rich people who have never had it tough say we should support the poor by taxing ourselves. Pop star coming out of Simon’s mouth sounds just the opposite of when he says something like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, or The Clash.
Pop music has its place in our society, but it is not a lasting place. We enjoy it in small amounts for a short period of time and then forget about it. I am praying this is the case with David Archuleta.
Rock and Roll Rebel David Cook

Just when you thought you had seen the last of American Idol for a while, it is hot on the Google Trends radar. This season’s winner David Cook is dating American Idol Season 2 contestant Kimberly Caldwell. Just image the shock and dismay that must be running through the music industry right. David Cook, a reasonably attractive rock star guy or so I am lead to believe by my wife, is dating a super hot blond. That is not the shocking part of it though. With all the publicity over dozens of other musicians being involved underage girls or accused of rape, Cook appears to being going against the grain. Not only is Kimberly Caldwell of legal age and having a consensual relationship with David Cook, she is actually older than him. Go David! What a way to be a rock and roll rebel…

What the Fuck is up with Randy. It seems we have slipped back into the early season when his wardrobe specialist had taken a sick day. Red velvet frock coats went out of style before Hendrix died.
The opening number had the top 12 and dancers from So You think You can dance. Dressed all in white and sing Get Ready they all sounded good and frankly Syesha looked hot. Read more

Yeah right with a cheesy boxing intro the final night of signing for American Idol has begun. I was personally hoping they would play around and Cook would have knocked Archuleta out cold. Each contestant will get 3 songs tonight. Cook opens.
Cook starts out with I Still haven’t Found What I’m Looking For. Assigned to him by Clive Davis we know it was a moment to remember. This is quite possibly his best singing sans guitar in a while. The judges love it because he was hot!
Archuleta has been assigned Elton John’s Don’t Let The Sun Go Down on Me. It is well sung which is what you would expect at this stage. He hits a few notes I don’t care for. He plays the audience well. The judges all love him.
Round one Cook had the better song and sounded better. Archuleta worked the crowd better. Judges give this round to Archuleta. I will agree. Round two has the contestants singing their choice from the writing competition entries.
Cook comes out playing hard with a great song called Dream Big. He rocks it out! Randy didn’t like the song but love the performance. Paula loved the rocker image. Simon doesn’t care for song.
Archuleta is singing that will probably be too sappy, but will be eaten up by the middle age mommas who have taken to watching idol this season.
The commercial break has given me my first look at the 3d version of Journey to the Center of the Earth. I had no idea this was coming out, and it isn’t one of my favorite Jules Verne novels, but it did look the effects are good. Katy got excited by Brendan Frasier which means I am getting some tonight. I also saw another commercial for Fringe and that looks fantastic. Read more

Well we are almost done and with any luck we won’t have to hear any song massacres tonight.
Fantasia sang I muted her. Judges babbled a bit, I went to the bathroom. We had some blah, blah, blah about Archuleta and his trip home, which I didn’t pay much attention to.
I am yawning a lot and think the Bones commercial is more interesting the anything I have seen tonight. Syesha had some blah, blah, blah.
I watched David Cook’s homecoming simply because I am a Missouri boy feeling a bit homesick. I recognized many of the place and felt better. Read more

Welcome back to another week of American Idiots participating in a popularity contest. Get Ready to Rummmmbbbbble!
Last week we got rid of wannabe white Rastafarian. I am sure he has had all week to toke instead of practice, so by the time the tour with their $500 seats roll around he should be good and rested.
Also last week Archuleta’s dad was voted off the island. The producers laid down the law and said Daddy Dearest could go, or they could both go. How will little Davey hold up this week.
This week the top three are singing three songs. The judges pick one song, the produces pick another, and then they get to fuck up and pick one themselves. Read more

Welcome back Idol fans. For anyone who actually watched last night’s American Idol, there should be no doubt about who is going home tonight. Here is you’re recap incase you missed it.
David Cook rocked out with Duran Duran’s Hungry Like The Wolf and Queen’s Baba O’Riley
Syesha Sang and Danced her way through Tina’s Proud Mary and looked better than she sang. She pulled Sam Cook for her second song which was technically better, but wasn’t as inspired.
Jason Castro destroyed I shot The Sheriff and Mister Tambourine Man.
David Archuleta actually gave solid performances of Stand By Me and Love Me Tender.
My May 6th American Idol Review can be seen here and on Digg’s Up and Coming page at this moment.
With 51,000,000 votes and no one being more than a million away from each other I am scared to think that people were actually voting for the train wreck that was Jason Castro. They start of with a group performance of Reeling in the Years, which sounds like crap. Read more
WTF Is Up With Jason Castro - American Idol 5-6-08

Welcome once again Idol fans to another week of WTF. We are down to four hopefuls. David Cook is the best all around performer, but shouldn’t win because they won’t have his interests at heart when they cut his album. Syesha Mercado should have been gone a long time ago but is starting to shine, but tonight’s theme could be tough. Jason Castro is hanging around just to annoy Simon. Then there is David Archuleta who I am betting is going to win because there are too many bubble heads who just think he is swell. With the Rock Hall opening its doors to these kids pick bad songs with this kind of availability they deserve to be shot David cook is rocking out Duran Duran’s Hungry Like The Wolf. Coming out sans guitar he is taking a risk. This would have been a great song for him to show his shit, but it still sounds good. Randy says okay. Paula says it left her with big appetite. Simon points out that he didn’t make it his own.
Syesha picks Tina’s version of Proud Mary. Well this could be the first WTF of the night. She does look hot in that shiny silver dress. I wonder if it has the matching mirrored panties? She has the moves and sound pretty good after it speeds up, but the beginning was only okay for me. Randy thought she was in the zone. Paula thought she looked like a star. Simon hated it, thinking it was a bad Tina Turner impersonation. Her attitude has changed in dealing with the judges too. She has become more gracious. Read more
