[ad]This week around the Blogosphere

Anyone who blogs and reads blogs will know this week that WordPress 2.5 was released finally. Many of you will also note that many bloggers didn’t put much care into their upgrade. At least this wasn’t as bad as an MS Vista release.

In Music NPR has had a pretty good Song of the Day this week. Thursday is Born a Woman by Nick Lowe. It is a great melody with some poignant lyrics. I am not really familiar with Nick’s music but the feel of this song had a definite Fountains of Wayne feel for me. Wednesday was Wonderwall by the Brad Mehldau Trio. It is a catchy jazz version of the Oasis classic. The tune is recognizable enough in the piano and bass parts that Katy looked at me and said “What the fuck! That is Wonderwall!” Tuesday Grand Archive had their moment with Sleepdriving on Tuesday. Austin TV had the Monday week opener with an interesting number in El Secreto (De las Luciérnagas). I barely speak Spanish as it is so the techno meets new way eighties music didn’t help my translation. The music is sort of interesting, but not really my cup of tea.

On the movies front I finally got Alvin and the Chipmunks and will give it a watch as soon as I let Liam have his TV privileges back. Barring that he is back to school on Monday, giving me plenty of time to indulge my inner kid. Ian at Just a Guy Thing gives us 27 Of The Greatest Movie Kill Scenes Ever Made. I’ve seen quite a number of these and definitely agree with their inclusion.

Last but not least we lost Ramiele Malubay on Idol. It was a moment sad to see her go this week for the simple fact I don’t get to see many hot asian women on TV that can sing. Unfortunately she was the last of the really hot ones, which leaves us with far less attractive, but just just as girly David Archuletea to massacre more music next week. Hopefully Daddy will ground him and forbid him to play idol next week.

Missy Higgins - A Musical Review

Missy Higgins - A Musical Review

[ad]Missy Higgins has a haunting new song in Where I Stood. The simple melody gets into your soul. If you have ever been madly in love and stop to listen to the lyrics be straight, gay, or otherwise they will strike a chord with you too.

Once described as “…the antithesis of the manufactured pop starlet…” Missy sits fine in my view of Australian Indie Music. One of the things I love most of her music is the fact she still has her accent when she sings. I hear her know without a doubt that she is Australian. While I am sure some will mistake the origin of her accent, that doesn’t matter. The fact it hasn’t been removed during in a million dollars of overproducing makes this music real for me.

You can listen to Missy’s latest album On a Clear Night, which includes Where I Stood on her website: www.missyhiggins.com I couldn’t find a bad track on the entire album and will soon be ordering a copy for myself.

Below are several YouTube clips of other songs of her from previous releases. They are great and deserve a listen. Once you do I think you be as smitten as I am. Finish digesting this Pop Culture Pop-Tart

Kate Maki - Musical Review

Kate Maki - Musical Review

[ad]photo_2c_by_mat_dunlap_thum.jpgKate Maki is a new artist for me with a great album called On High. Her music speaks for itself over on Kate’s MySpace page where you can listen to everything I mention this morning. The offerings from On High that I have heard so far blow me away with a full range of style and a lot of class. I can’t wait to find a copy for myself. I may well get this gem on vinyl as well as download it. Zoom on over to her MySpace page and give the music a listen.

Blue Morning gives me that old time country feel to the guitars and percussion. Her voice with its twang gives me a definite Patsy Cline vibe. She continues her stylistic tour with Highway, where I get the late sixties folk rocker feel from the songs simplicity in both vocal and musical arrangements. The tour moves more modern and jazzy with the opening piano White Noise. I could almost hear this song coming out of the mouth of Norah Jones. Don’t fills me with a Lou Reed song, if the background singers were the ones in charge of making the music. Ode pulls me back to the sixties and I can picture her in white go-go boots. The final online offering is Forever Blue is from Kate’s 2004 release The Sun Will Find Us. With a decidedly harder rock sound, Kate blasts me away with a song that would be right at home coming out of the mouth of Tom Petty or Neil Young, or better yet, the Traveling Wilburys wouldn’t be remiss in asking her to join.

Despite the comparisons I have made Kate is truly an original with a long successful career ahead of her. I love what I have heard so far and can’t wait to hear more. Finish digesting this Pop Culture Pop-Tart
