Is America Ready for a Gay Idol?

This was the headline in Yahoo Insider this morning. I have to say the two subjects of this question Danny Noriega and David Hernandez are not the faces the GBLT community wants to portray at the moment. With the notion of civil unions becoming ever closer on a national level and other political advances looming. Neither James and Jessica Liberal nor Chuck and Connie Conservative should have the effeminate Danny or the stripping David rammed down their throats. With this pair in the spotlight on idol and Brack Obama having ex-gay Donnie McClurkin headline his gospel concert, I fear the gay factor may actually hurt the democrats come November.

The community needs to come out with people who will appear normal to the average voter and neither make the liberals nervous nor enrage the neocons. I am not saying that Danny or David should change who they are, even if I do get annoyed with prissy behavior out of Danny. Eccentric behavior while not unique to the gay community, is part of what makes them a diverse and interesting group of people. It is part of what makes them a community rather than just a sexual minority.

On the other hand, it has always been the eccentric behavior that has held the community back from getting the acceptance they want. Unless they too want to lose in November to the republicans, I am putting oout the challenge to the community to start policing your own. Every time a stripper or prissy effeminate teen is seen on TV, the community needs to put the face of a dozen or more well spoken, hard working, average looking gays and lesbians who could be anyone’s neighbor or friend; brother or sister, son or daughter; mother or father. If you don’t want another four or eight years of republican control, then it is time to buck up and do your part to help the democrats win, no matter which candidate comes out on top.

Even if it feels like you may be losing the war at the moment, unless you are willing to do what it takes to win the battle you will never get to hold up the sign saying, “Missioned accomplished, just married!”
