Paula Abdul Scared of Kara DioGuardi

Everyone from Fox News to The Other Blog to Your Mom is talking about Kara DioGuardi as the latest edition to American Idol.

Paula Abdul is excited but “concerned” about new “American Idol” judge Kara DioGuardi, she told Phoenix’s 104.7 KISS FM Johnjay & Rich radio show on Monday.

“I am concerned about the audience and acceptance. Time will tell. We’ll see,” she said.

She also said producers hired the Grammy-nominated songwriter because they “wanted to try a change.

If anyone should be concerned by this move it is Randy Jackson. Simply put Kara is no where flaky enough to replace Paula. It is possible that Paula Abdul is concerned that Kara will be just as mean to her as Simon, but I kind of doubt it. Kara just doesn’t seem to be the type who would go in for the sarcasm, she seems like the type that would instantly go to hair pulling, eyes scratching and biting.

I simply can’t wait to see how this potential disaster works out. I am finally looking forward to the cold of January.

simon-150x150 Idolize This

According to reports from TV Guide, Simon Cowell is promising big changes on Idol this year. With auditions and the tour underway we can only guess what is going though his head.

Chief among Cowell’s complaints was what he called the overwhelming media-savviness of this season’s contestants. “I’m not sure that they ever showed their real personalities,” he said. “They were like robots.” (Nevertheless, he praised last season’s runner-up, David Archuleta, on his recent success, calling him “the perfect pop star.”)

Of course the way I read pop star it was said with the enthusiasm and happiness that rich people who have never had it tough say we should support the poor by taxing ourselves. Pop star coming out of Simon’s mouth sounds just the opposite of when he says something like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, or The Clash.

Pop music has its place in our society, but it is not a lasting place. We enjoy it in small amounts for a short period of time and then forget about it. I am praying this is the case with David Archuleta.530140622_fd9e6cf891 Idolize This

The Gits

August 23, 2008

gits The GitsIn between trying to finish a collection of short stories and novellas, editing another novel, and the general depression that has been hounding me like a bad hangover I have found myself falling back in step with my second musical awakening, a period between 1990 and 1994. Facing my own mortality of late, I have thought about all the greats who are no longer with us and it saddens me. Yes, yes, this is where I pine for the loss of Kurt Cobain, Andrew Wood, and Shannon Hoon. I may feel a sadness for their loss, but unlike some people I accept that they are really and truly dead. Another of those laments is for Mia Zapata of Git.

For those of you who don’t know Git, you are at a loss. Git was one of those bands that really had potential to mainstream by holding the course. They were raw and powerful, just what grunge was supposed to be. Then it was cut short all to suddenly with the murder of Mia. A few days ago I saw they released a greatest hits, which I always find ironic since so few people even know their name. This is industry semantics that always grind me raw. I prefer to think of this CD as simply some of their best work. it was a pleasure to listen to and took me back to a defining time in my musical existence.

Next time you light a candle for Kurt try lighting one for Mia too, she is just as deserving.

Katy Perry Pics

August 21, 2008

The first time I saw Kate Perry or Katy Perry if you like was on So you Think you Can Dance singing I Kissed a Girl. Much to my chagrin She did not kiss Courtney Ann Galiano or Katee Sheen. Oh Well, but if you like Katy Perry pics and want to see her actually kiss a girl try this video.

The 16 year old girl, Jennavieve Buhmann, she kissed is giving a video interview in the video below.

You can see more of this girl at myspace.

Ricky Martin Gay

August 21, 2008

ricky_martin_baby_82008-thumb Ricky Martin GayIf you have ever seen him prancing around on stage touching himself you might get the impression Ricky Martin is gay. If you have ever heard the pretentious (to midwestern ears) accent you might think Ricky Martin is gay. If you look at the fact he has through a surrogate had twin boys you might think he is gay. if you are obsessed with the notion that someone famous might be gay, then Ricky Martin might be gay. Here is the thing though, it doesn’t fucking matter if Ricky Martin is gay!

Is he sticking his dick in your mouth? Is he sticking in your ass? If you are concerned whether Ricky Martin is gay you probably speak out your ass enough for one of those questions to be redundant. So what if he likes men? If you like his music or that of any other potentially gay man Clay Aiken then does it matter what his sexual preference is?

When you belt out any Queen song do you first ask yourself should I be singing this because Freddy Mercury was gay? Do you feel the need to check your straightness when you catch yourself humming along to something by Elton John? Does listening to Hüsker Dü change how you feel about the opposite sex? Does listening to REM make you want to watch hot man love fan vids? The answer is, of course not.

If you like Rick Martin’s music it doesn’t matter if he is gay. if you like to look at Ricky Martin does it matter if he is gay since the chances of you having sex with him is next to nothing which ever way you swing. If you don’t like his music, can’t stand the sight of him, or aren’t gay yourself why are you concerned whether Ricky Martin is gay?

Give it a rest!

Darwin’s Bear

August 13, 2008

I don’t often get to recommend books on The Other Blog simply because I don’t get a chance to read nearly as much as I would like. This is true for many reasons, mostly because I spend so much time writing my own fiction and in free time I often only have time for quick reads of old favorites. Insomnia though has brought me two great reads from Greg Bear.

As a master of Science fiction, I am loathe to say I hadn’t read much of his work before and what I had read were only anthology inclusions picked up for some other author. That will change. I picked up Darwin’s Radio at the library simply out of curiosity and left with it like so many other books, having the intention to read them but not finding the time before or after I already owed fines.

darwin's radio by greg bear

Darwin’s Radio is the story of love and fear interwoven with biology, anthropology and modern politics. I have had a lot of time lately to think what family means to me, and this book was picked up at the right time in my life to have a full impact. There are notions that will put both Darwinians, Creationists, pro-choice and pro-lifers on edge in ways you wouldn’t necessarily count on ever happening. True crises help people figure out where there priorities are and in places in the novel I was wondering when the radical black lesbian vegetarians were going to stand side by side with good ol’ boys of the NRA and Klan to fight the guv’ment as one. (He didn’t go quite that far)

Like all good science fiction Darwin’s Radio left me hanging with lots of questions about what if. There was more story to be told. I was sufficiently pleased to go back to the library and see there was a sequel, Darwin’s Children. This answered many of the longing questions I had been left with about the characters I so quickly became attached to. However it too was a powerful novel that leaves you thinking in the end.

If you enjoy intellectual fiction of any type picking up Darwin’s Radio and Darwin’s Children would not be a mistake. If you have already read this and are looking for other recommendations you can’t go wrong with Steven Baxter’s Evolution of Robert J Sawyer’s Neanderthal Parallax Series: Hominids, Humans, Hybrids.
